15th The Virgin of Candelaria is the patron saint of the Canary Islands and the fiestas in her honour bring together churchgoers and visitors from all over the island, who partake in numerous religious and festive events. Many of them make the trip on foot from their homes, a tradition that on the previous night fills the roads of the island with pilgrims. Among the many events that make up the programme for these fiestas, one that stands out is the re-enactment of the appearance of the first statue of the Virgin of Candelaria to the Guanches, the ancient inhabitants of the Canary Islands. A group of locals dressed in aboriginal clothing re-enact this legend every year.
16th Romería of San Roque in Garachico One of the most beautiful and deep rooted tradition in the island, the “romería” in Garachico is celebrated in honour of San Roque. A typical folk meeting where drinking, eating, singing and dancing is part of the whole ceremony.
17th – 21stFolk Festival Plaza de El Médano, twining countries and cultures from the whole world since the first edition of this festival 18 years ago. 20th Goymar Fest Puertito de Guimar As always, a landmark summer for fans of hard and alternative sounds, from metal to punk through to rockabilly. A music festival for head bangers. Goymar Fest features ten bands whose attitude fuelled names like Guerilla Urbana, Brutalizzed Kids and Hot Vulcan stompers make it clear that this isn’t the place for anyone looking for a Drifters tribute band. But if you’re ready to rock to some old school heavy metal then bingo, it’s time to tune up those air guitars. If the head banging becomes a bit too much there’s also a Harley Davidson exhibition, football competitions and beer and food stalls. Entrance is free.

20th Hiking Program – Ruta del Carmen Cruz – Punta del Hidalgo This activity is part of the program “Walking the Islands” to reserve a place e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org The route starts at the restaurant “Cruz del Carmen” descends to the village of Las Carboneras and eventually to Punta del Hidalgo from where you can enjoy breathtaking scenery and the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean. Distance 10.5km Duration approx.5h.
20th Discoteca Musa Santa Cruz - They say charity begins at home Giovanny is a 9 month old child who is in desperate need of a liver transplant. Giovanny is currently in Madrid with his parents hoping for a donor and waiting for the courts to give permission for the baby’s mother to donate part of her liver to her son. Time and money is running out. CD Tenerife fan club have organized a charity concert at Discoteca Musa in Santa Cruz. Tickets are only €5 and all proceeds will go to the family. Start time 9.00
21st – K9 fundraiser – The Lucky Leprechaun, Chaparral Centre Costa del Silencio. Starting at 4pm entertainment from Pip Brown and an exhibition from the Ritmania Dance School. There will be Irish Stew to consume, raffle prizes up for grabs, and the sale of books, cards, jewellery & K9 merchandise. Supporters are again requested to bring along some treats for the dogs & cats at the kennels, as this is all about raising monies for their care.
22nd Aug – 5th Sept Bavarian Week Plaza de Europa - a schedule of culinary, music and cultural activities that will end with the Beer Fiesta. An event that brings this German tradition to Puerto de la Cruz, Beer Festival: September 3 19.00h.
27th Baskets, bread rolls and hopefully proposals. Culture and traditions will be at Santa Barbara town in Icod de los Vinos. “Marriageable” girls will walk with bread rolls baskets over their heads through the city centre. A multicoloured pilgrimage with typical customs and handicraft goods.
28th Corazones de Tejina (The Hearts of Tejina) Every August, in the town of Tejina, in the district of La Laguna, one of the most original festivals in Tenerife takes place. It is known as the “Corazones de Tejina” (the hearts of Tejina) in honour of Saint Bartholomew: its strange name comes from the custom of making three large, hearts from beech that are decorated with flowers and fruit. In the town, there is a healthy rivalry between the neighbours of the “Calle de Arriba” (Upper Street), the Calle de Abajo (Lower Street) and El Pico (the Peak): these three compete to see who can make the most beautiful heart. Apart from the hearts, there are many other unique, traditional events, such as, burning the “haragán,” a type of rag doll, which brings the fiestas to an end.
