I am a bit disappointed that I won’t be around to do this year’s Walk for Life in aid of breast cancer which will be on Sunday 15th December. It starts at 10.30am from the Magma Centre in Las Americas, continues around the Conquistador Hotel and after taking a leisurely stroll along the sea front ends in Los Cristianos by Las Vistas Beach.
Last year we joined not only hundreds, but over two thousand people who believe in raising awareness about this disease. It doesn´t take any effort to support this worthwhile cause, the pace is gentle, the company friendly and there is a lot of fun thrown in as well. People of all nationalities take part, most wearing pink, many in costume and all accompanied by the beat of a drum to keep us in step. Even the doggies that accompany their owners are decked out with pink ribbons and bows, well not mine, as neither would suffer to wear them – perhaps they feel they could look silly in front of such a huge crowd.
At the end, the walkers are generally greeted with a concert of live music from local entertainers, food and drink stalls and lots of people collecting in buckets. The total amount raised each year is handed to two local cancer associations. Last year, a whopping €16.000 was raised which went entirely to Asociación Española contra el Cáncer (AECC) and the Asociación de Mujeres afectadas por Cáncer de mama (Ámate) to help those affected. As with every year it is hoped to beat the previous amount and so far I think they have managed to do just that. I am sorry I will miss this year, but hope they do really well.
